Marcia Mount Shoop on BRC and FriendsToday I welcome to the show
Rev. Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop

Google Hangout

The Rev. Marcia Mount Shoop, PhD moved to West Lafayette with her family last year when her husband, John, became the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Purdue.  Dr. Mount Shoop is an author, theologian, and minister.  Her newest book was just released this summer by Cascade Books and is entitled, Touchdowns for Jesus and Other Signs of Apocalypse: Lifting the Veil on Big-Time Sports.  Her first book, Let the Bones Dance: Embodiment and the Body of Christ (WJKP), was released in 2010.  You can read more about her ministry at www.marciamountshoop.com.

Marcia is a theologian, author, preacher/teacher, blogger, mother, middle school cross country coach, football coach’s wife, caretaker of several animals on our small farm, etc, etc. A day can involve mucking horse manure, taking kids to school, writing, being on a conference call for COGA, planning consulting work with academic institutions or churches, running a cross country practice with 50 middle schoolers, having a phone appointment with a rape survivor, going to an event for football families, driving carpool for soccer practice, fixing dinner, mowing grass, doing laundry, checking homework, putting the horses up, watching a few contestants on American Ninja Warrior, getting everyone set up with essential oils for a good nights sleep, and finally going to bed with one of my two blue heelers under my bed and the cat hopefully outside so he won’t wake me up at 3am to want to go out.

She is most passionate about issues of race and privilege and power in lots of areas of American culture. Right now, with my new book, my focus is on race/privilege/power in the world of big-time sports.  This is also involved in work around power and sexual violence–what it means to form healing communities around the realities of sexual violence.
